How to use flat brim cap driver

Custom embroidered hats are one of the most profitable products you can make with your embroidery machine. While flat bed embroidery machines can embroidery soft, non-structured hats, a free arm or multi needle machine is needed in order to stitch on structured hats and it uses a speciality driver. When I first got my Brother Persona, it came with the traditional cap driver that fits both Brother and Baby Lock machines. It looks very intimidating to use at first, but once you try it, it’s not that bad. One thing that was hard with the traditional cap driver it that you can not get the design very close to the bottom/ bill of the hat. However a couple of years ago, they came out with a new cap driver system that is not only easier to use, but also allows you to stitch closer to the bill. Its called the Flat Brim Cap Driver.

In this tutorial I will show you how to use the Flat Brim Cap Driver on my Brother PR680W 6 needle embroidery machine. We will go over how to hoop a structured hat and set it all up. I will also be making a custom design using Embrilliance Essentials and show you some important things to remember when stitching on a hat and how it is different from stitching on flat items.

I spoke with Blaine at SewingMachinesPlus.com and asked him if we can have a special deal for my followers if any of y’all are interested in getting the Brother PR680W and/ or Flat Brim Cap Driver and he said YES!! This will be a CALL IN SPECIAL just for Karlie Belle followers. If you would like more info, contact Laura @ SMP and she can help you over the phone. Her direct phone number is 800-401-8151 Ext: 117 or you can email her at [email protected]. Laura is the only salesperson that has this deal available. So if you speak to someone else, ask them if you can leave a message for Laura. Just tell her you want the Karlie Belle Call in Special and she can answer all of your questions!

The font I used for my SAINTS hat is Livy Lou from Alphalicious Designs

In the Hoop Spider web Purse

I am finally back from summer break and I am ready for all things Halloween! One fun accessory you can add to your Halloween wardrobe is an embroidered spider web purse. In the past, we have made in the hoop zippered bags, but this time we will be going over how to add hardware so that we can attach straps to the bag and use it as a crossbody purse! This is the first time I am trying out a design from String Theory Fabric Art. I have admired their designs for years, and am excited I am finally stitching one of their patterns out now.

This spider web purse design comes in several sizes and you can either choose to purchase just one size, or get a bundle of all the sizes. The project is done completely in the hoop, even the zipper! There is a 2 part hooping option if you wish to have the hanging spider in the front of the bag. I would say this is more of an intermediate project, but I am hoping that if you follow along in the video, this will be great for beginners to try 😁. For the tutorial, I will be using my Brother NQ1700e and making the 6×10 sized spider web purse. However the pattern comes in as little as 4×4 and as big as 8×12, so it can be made on any machine.

Embroidered BBQ Apron for Father’s Day

It’s almost summer and with that comes BBQ time! My husband loves to grill on our back patio, however he tends to make a mess, especially when he is cleaning the grill 🤣. For Father’s Day, I thought making him a black apron would help with that. I was looking for BBQ design ideas to put on the apron and ran across this “GrillFather” design that I loved! My step-dad is a big fan of The Godfather, so I think he will love this too 😁. This is a great beginner project and can be done on any machine. I will be using the 5×7 sized design and stitching it on my Brother PR1X embroidery machine. During the class I will go over several hooping options including using the hoop that came with my machine, mighty hoop, and Durkee EZ Frame. I will also go over how I changed the design a little using Embrilliance Essentials embroidery software.

Embroidered Wreath Sash

Spring is here and I love to change the decor on my front door to match the season. One trend is a boxwood wreath with a wreath sash hanging from the bottom. Lately I have seen some beautiful embroidery and monograms on these wreath sashes and wanted to try and make one for some Mother’s Day presents. This is a very simple project that is 4×4 friendly and can be done on any machine. I will be using my Brother PE800 for this tutorial so that you can see how easy it is. Also I am going to make my own sash from some scrape fabric, but you can also buy a wreath sash already made. One advantage of making your own is that you can embroider it before you sew it up and then the back of the embroidery will be hidden!

Embroidered Logo on Golf Shirts using Mighty Hoop System and Ricoma EM1010

This week for Sip & Stitch we are diving into the world of embroidered logos on polo shirts. If you are a small business with a free arm or multi needle machine, this may be one of the most requested items that you will get. This can also be one of the hardest items to get placement just right. That is where Mighty Hoops and the Hoopmaster Hooping stationcome in to make your life so much easier. I have been looking at the system for years and finally took the plunge and got it after seeing it in person at the Impressions Expo in Long Beach California this past January. It couldn’t have come at a better time either because I just got an order for 13 golf shirts with both a logo on the left chest and a name on the right chest.

Mighty hoops are only made for free arm or multi needle machines, so this tutorial will be more for our friends with bigger machines. However we will still be going over placement of logos that may be helpful for flatbed machines. Also Hoopmaster does have a hooping system specific for flatbed machines. I haven’t tried it out myself, but I might get it in the future so that I can use it for tutorials.

I will be using my Ricoma EM1010 10 needle embroidery machine for this project, but Mighty Hoops does make hoops for any brand machine including Brother and Baby Lock.

In the Hoop Bunny Treat Bag

I love making little homemade gifts to put in Easter baskets for my girls and family. While searching for designs, I ran across this adorable Bunny Treat Bag from Embroidery Boutique. This is a very simple in the hoop project that can be personalized and stitches out really quick! This project is available in 5×7, 6×10, and 8×12 sizes. I will be showing you how to make this on my Brother Stellaire 2 but you can make this bunny treat bag on any machine that has a 5×7 hoop or larger. I will also go over how you can personalize this project using embroidery fonts and Embrilliance Essentials software.

For our first Sip & Stitch project for the new year, we will be getting ready for Valentine’s Day by making an in the hoop mini hanging quilt. Applique Baby Onesie on Brother Skitch Embroidery Machines

When I got my first embroidery machine, the PE770, one of the main things I wanted to make was adorable onesies and shirts for my little girl. I quickly learned that hooping and stitching a onesie on a flatbed embroidery machine requires more baby-sitting and patience than watching a toddler with slime and a bowl full of glitter 🤣😬. I learned my way around and found some tricks to help me on my flatbed machine, but when I got my first free arm embroidery machine, my life was changed FOREVER 🤩. But with that free arm machine came a hefty price tag! However Brother just changed the game! They have released a new and redesigned 4×4 embroidery machine that has a FREE ARM!! And it costs less than my old PE770 before the price went up on everything in 2020!

So for this Sip & Stitch tutorial, I will be showing you just how easy it is to applique a baby onesie on the Brother Skitch. I will be using an adorable applique cozy couple with Christmas lights design from my friend Joy at Alphalicious Designs. She was kind enough to offer all of us a 50% off coupon to be used with any of the styles of cozy couple with lights has. You can get it as a bean, zig zag, or blanket finishing stitch! use coupon code AlphaCollabKB1 at checkout. Coupon expires 12/31/23.

Neckline & Sleeve Embroidery using PE800

Embroidered sweatshirts make an excellent present for the holiday season! Curved neckline embroidery has been popular for a while, however I have seen a surge in embroidered sleeves to go with it. I love this trend and there are so many fun personalized projects that we can make with this. Now this project would be easiest on a free arm machine like my PRX1, or multi-needle like my PR680W or Ricoma EM101. But I want to show you its possible on a flatbed machine too so I will be using my PE800 in this tutorial. I will be going over 2 different hooping methods for the sleeve and how to curve text in Embrilliance Essentials to create the neckline.

I will be making my mom a grandma sweater and will put her grandkids names on the sleeve. I love the look of a little heart under the names. So I made one for you to download for FREE. Just click the button below to grab it.

Felt Applique Sweatshirt

As fall is approaching, embroidered sweatshirts and sweaters will become more and more popular. Recently, a picture of an embroidered sweatshirt caught my eye on Facebook. The sweatshirt contained a perfectly cut felt name with hand stitching on top. I immediately thought of ways we can have this same look but using our embroidery and cutting machines. I reached out to my friend Lyndsie at Lynnie Pinnie and asked if she had any pretty script fonts that looked like hand stitched embroidery. Not only did she have exactly what I wanted, but she also had a new applique font that had a very similar look as to what I was going for!

You can grab the newly released fonts from Lynnie Pinnie at 60% off right now and I have a coupon for you to get 50% off everything except new releases.

I will be going over several ways that you can get this look and using my new Brother PRX1 embroidery machine to stitch out a sweatshirt.

Embroidered Hat on a Multi-Needle

This week for Sip & Stitch we will be going over how to embroider a hat using a multi-needle or free arm machine and a cap driver. Hats are really fun to make with your embroidery machine, however the cap driver can be very intimidating to try for the first time. I will show you step by step how easy it is to remove your frame holder, attach the cap driver, hoop the hat using the cap ring and hooping station, then finally loading and stitching your hat. Once you see how easy it is, you will be making hats all the time. If you ever decide to start selling custom hats, you will love how large your profit margin is compared to embroidered clothing! Especially if you can get hats at wholesale pricing!

I will be using a cute design from Bella Bleu Embroidery. My husband recently got a fishing boat, so “Boat Hair Don’t Care” is perfect for my hat design 🚤😎. What I love about all of the hat designs from Bella Bleu is that they are specially digitized for hats. I will be going over what this means durning the tutorial.

I will be using my Brother PR680W 6 needle embroidery machine for this project, but the same process can be used for the PersonaAlliance, or any Brother/ Baby Lock 6 or 10 needle machine.

If you have a flatbed machine and are interested in learning how you can embroidery soft hats with your machine, check out this past Sip & Stitch.

Embroidered Swim Bag

It’s officially summer and I don’t know about y’all, but we go swimming every chance we get. Something that comes in really handy to have in our beach bag is a wet or swim bag. I am obsessed with these nylon bags that I got from my friend Kelly aka the Embroidery Nurse. She started this awesome embroidery blanks Facebook group a while back and she finds the best stuff!

The nylon swim bag will be using is not the easiest bag to turn inside out and float on a flatbed machine. So I will be using my Brother Persona and Durkee EZ Frames to do this project. Having a free arm and EZ Frames makes it sooooo much easier to stitch hard to hoop items like bags!

Supplies Needed:

If you want to make patches instead on embroidering right onto the bag, then grab these supplies too:

Printing on Cotton Shirts with a Luminaris 200 White Toner Printer

This week for Sip & Stitch we will be taking a break from embroidery and will be making shirts using my Luminaris 200 white toner printer. As much as I love sublimation, I really have a hard time with only being able to sub onto light colored, high polyester shirts. I did some research and found the solution to my problem could be solved by using a white toner printer. Not only can I print designs that can be pressed on any kind of material, like 100% cotton, but I can also print designs that have white ink and press them onto black shirts!! If you are interested in expanding your embroidery, vinyl, or sublimation business, this may be a great option for you!

Next weekend, we are going to my daughters dance competition and it also so happens to be my birthday 🥳. So to celebrate I want to make some cute shirts to wear over the weekend.  Creative Fabrica is my go to place for designs of all kinds. Since my birthday is on Cinco de Mayo, I wanted something festive and I found a really cute design that says Mamacita needs a Margarita 🍹. Then, I also found 2 Dance Mom designs that I really like.

In the Hoop Zippered Rosette Bag

This week for Sip & stitch we will be making a very cute in the hoop Rosette Zippered Bag from my friend Melissa at Designs by Little Bee. When I first discovered that zippered bags can be made on an embroidery machine, I was amazed. You will love this project and I will guide you step by step how to put your bag together. What makes this project even better is that Melissa is offering the design totally FREE for the month of April 2023! The design comes in 5×7, 6×10, and 8×12. Applique Easter Basket using PE800 and Magnetic Hoop

Easter is almost upon us and if you are last minute like me, you are just starting to get everything ready for when the big bunny will pass 🐇. When I was at the Everything Embroidery Market, I did a lot of shopping and one of the things I grabbed were these cute gingham Easter Buckets from Bayou Blanks. I posted a poll in my Facebook group asking everyone what machine did they want me to use for this project and the Brother PE800 using a Magnetic Hoop was the winner by a landslide. These buckets are soft and can be floated on a regular hoop on any flatbed machine. They are also super easy to float on EZ frames on your free arm or multi needle machine. I couldn’t quite find a design that I wanted for these buckets, so I decided to make my own. As a thank you for watching, you can get my zig zag banner applique for FREE. It comes in 4, 5, and 6 inches in width and they are all 1.5 inches tall.

4 Leaf Clover In the Hoop Feltie or CutCake

This weeks Sip & Stitch project is to make 4 leaf clover in the hoop felties or CutCakes as Applique Alley likes to call them. This is a super fun and easy beginner in the hoop project that can be made on any machine and is 4×4 hoop friendly! One thing I love about this project is that it is so versatile in that just this one design, I can make 6 different projects!! Because it comes in multiple sizes I can use them to make a centerpiece for a bow, a pin for a shirt, a clip for a headband, a hair barrette, a pair of earrings, a necklace, and a pin for a shirt! For the tutorial I will show you how to stitch the design out, then show examples of how to put all 6 projects together easily.

How to Embroider with Chenille Yarn

One of the latest trends in embroidery is adding fluffy chenille yarn to sweatshirts. This looked so cool to me so of course I had to try it! The videos I have seen involved people putting their fingers wayyyyy to close to the needle so I thought there has to be a better way. So I have been playing with it and I think I have a good solution. I tested this project out on 3 different machines. My Brother Persona was the easiest to work on. The presser foot allows you to have the fluffy yarn with no problem. I also tried it on my Baby Lock Altair, which allows me to raise the height of the presser foot. So I was able to do this kind of project on my flatbed single needle machine. The last one I tried was my Brother PE800. This machine does not have an option of adjusting the presser foot height. This made it a little bit more challenging, however I was still able to get it done!

In this tutorial, I will go over tips and tricks to help you to embroider with chenille yarn. As I mentioned above, this project can be done on any machine, but I will be using my Brother Persona. As a bonus I have a FREE Heart design download for you to try this technique! I will also go over how to use some bean stitch designs and fonts you already have, and make them chenille yarn friendly.

How to Embroider a Valentines Day Onesie on the Brother PR680W

I was a very good girl last year and Santa brought me a new Brother PR680W 6 needle embroidery machine 😍. This week I am going to go over how to embroider a cute Valentine’s Day onesie using Durkee EZ Frames. One of the best things about upgrading from a flatbed machine to a free arm machine like this one is that it makes it soooooo much easier to hoop and embroider small items like onesies. You don’t have to worry as much about accidentally stitching the shirt to itself and you don’t have to babysit it to keep all of the extra material out of the way!

Even though I am showing this project on a 6 needle machine, you can do this at home on any machine. The design comes in as small as 4×4 and check out this post on how to hoop a onesie on a flatbed machine if you need help with that!

Hocus Pocus Themed Applique Garden Flag

Hocus Pocus is my all time favorite Halloween movie. When I found out a sequel was being release on Sept 30th, I was excited like a kid in a candy shop 😂. To celebrate this awesome occasion, I want to make a Sanderson Sister’s Bed & Breakfast Garden Flag. I remembered admiring a witch trio applique at Marmiebee Designs and thought that would be perfect for my garden flag. I will be doing this project on my Baby Lock Altair using the large 9.5 x 9.5 inch hoop. The witch applique design also comes in a 5×7 size option so that you can tailor this project to fit the machine and hoop size you have.

In the hoop Mini Notebook Cover

The end of the school year is approaching fast and with that comes teacher presents. This week for Sip & Stitch I will show you how to make these adorable in the hoop notebook covers from Designs by Little Bee. Melissa has made a ton of wonderful designs, and for this project I choose the Pencil and Paper design which I think will make a great gift!

This design comes in lots of options even though it is only one size. I will be going over how to complete the whole notebook cover in one hooping using a 6×10 hoop. I will also go over how to add appliqué to the notebook along with different placement options for the snap.

If your machine only has a 5×7 hoop, don’t worry because you can still make this project! It has to be done in 2 hoopings and it comes together very easily. My friend Bethany at Bethadilly on YouTube filmed how to make this notebook cover using this method. She has a Baby Lock Alliance which has an 8×8 hoop, but the same process she shows is done in a 5×7 hoop. Check out her video here to see the tutorial.

In the Hoop Halloween Treat Bag

Can you believe that it’s October already!! I have to say that this is my favorite month! I love all things Halloween! We will kick off this month with an adorable in the hoop treat bag. This project is great for kids to give to their cousins, neighbors, friends at school and church, and with teammates and after school activity friends.

This treat bag design comes in sizes from as little at 4×4 up to 7×12. This week I will be using my Brother NQ3600D to make a 4×4 witch treat bag. But you can follow along and make any of the cute treat bags on any machine, the process will be the same no matter what you are using.

I am excited to make this very fun project with you Friday night! I look forward to chatting with you all! #sipnstitchsquad

Collegiate Applique Letters using 5×12 Multi-position Hoop (PE770/ PE800)

Are you ready for some football (said in my best Monday night football voice 😂). This Friday we will be making collegiate/ varsity appliqué letters on a shirt. I am very excited to show you how you can do ADULT SIZE lettering on your PE770/ PE800/ SE1900 using the 5×12 multi-position hoop. A 5×7 hoop can be limiting to only baby and toddler sized clothing. But with the 5×12 hoop and Embrilliance Essentials, you can take it up a step to do some designs large enough for adults 😁. I will be making an LSU shirt for this project, but you can use the appliqué alpha to make any team/ school you want!

Supplies Needed:

I am excited to be back with y’all after missing the past few weeks due to Hurricane Ida. I look forward to chatting with you Friday night! #sipnstitchsquad

In the Hoop Crayon Box Hand Sanitizer Holder

We are keeping with the Back to School theme this week by making an adorable crayon box hand sanitizer holder from Designs by Little Bee. Melissa has the best in the hoop designs and I can go crazy on her website. I got to meet her last month at the Applique Getaway and she is super nice and has the best hair 💜!

This project can be done on any machine but I will be showing you how to make multiple of these in my large hoop on my Ricoma EM-1010. If you have an Etsy shop or sell at craft shows, these can be a big seller.

Supplies Needed:

Remember if you are ever interested in getting a Ricoma, please reach out to me.  My referral link will save you $100 off your order and I have a special Ricoma Owners Facebook group with free training for those who order their machine through me 😁.

Embroidered Koozie for Father’s Day

This weeks project is to learn how to embroider a can cooler or koozie. This is a fun and easy project that can be done with any machine since we will use the 4×4 hoop. These will make great Father’s Day presents, however I could not find cute designs or sayings that were small enough, so I decided to just make my own. I used Embrilliance Essentials and a mixture of BX fonts that I already own to make cute sayings.

Embroidered Straw Beach Hat

Staying on our summer theme kick, this week we will be embroidering straw beach hats. There are so many possibilities of different sayings or personalizations you can add! I ask my girls if they would like their monograms, names, Hello Summer, or Hello Sunshine and they both chose Hello Sunshine. I also though Big Sister and Little Sister would be a cute choice for them.

I will be using Embrilliance Essentials in order to modify the text so that it curves around the brim of the hat. The 6×10 hoop from my Brother NQ3600D works perfect for the phrase Hello Sunshine 🌞.

Applique Name Frame Beach Towel on the Ricoma EM-1010

Summer is fast approaching and my go to birthday gift for kids this time of year is personalized beach towels. These are fun and easy projects that can be done on most machines, but of course the bigger the hoop, the bigger you can make the design on the towel. For this project I am using my Ricoma EM-1010 which has an 8×12 hoop, so I can make an extra long name frame, which I am very excited about.

I found these adorable summer applique name frames on Creative Appliques and of course I couldn’t just choose one, so I bought the bundle of 14 of them. There is an extra discount when you check out plus a free font!! So, I got 14 designs and 1 font set for just over $13 🥳!

Supplies needed:

Faux Smock Embroidery Design & Embroidered Name on Stuffed Bunny Ears

This Sip & Stitch is gonna be jammed packed with fun. Lets all see how well I can multi-task 🤣! We are going to attempt to do 2 projects at once. First we will set up a kids shirt on my Ricoma EM-1010 to do a Faux Smock embroidery design. Since this design is all thread, it is a great project to do on my multi-needle Ricoma because I can set it up and walk away 🙌. While this is stitching out, I will show you how to embroider a name on the long floppy ear of a bunny stuffed animal. We will go over ripping the seam, embroidering a name using my PE770 (PE800), and sewing the ear back up.

Both of these projects can be done on almost any machine, so I hope you can join in on the fun!
