Let’s get ready for fall with a Happy Fall Y’all kitchen towel. A kitchen towel is one of my favorite first projects. Towels are easy to float, the rest of the towel stays out of the way while it stitches, and you can make this on any machine. My design is 5×7, and I stitched mine on my Ricoma EM-1010 using Durkee EZ Frames. I also show how I used wash away stabilizer and clips instead of sticky tear away, so the back looks nice enough to give as a gift. You don’t need a multi-needle machine, though. Any embroidery machine with a 5×7 hoop works, and the pumpkin comes in smaller sizes if your working with a 4×4

Before you start, put everything within reach, especially your small scissors. Once the letters begin, you’ll be going back and forth between the machine and your cutting table a lot. Get your applique fabric ready ahead of time, too, so it’s waiting for yo when the machine stops.
Build Your Fall Design in Embrilliance Essentials
Open the pumpkin file in Embrilliance Essentials. In Preferences, choose your hoop size and orientation. I’m using a vertical 5×7 layout with the pumpkins near the bottom and room above them for the words.
I love the fill on these pumpkins. It has a textured look, a bit like cross-stitch, so little bits of towel show through. That’s part of the design, so don’t worry if you see some.
Add each word as its own lettering object. That way you can pick a different font for each one and move them around separately. Here’s what I used:
- Happy: Finn from Designs by JuJu
- FALL: Gavin applique font from Joy Kate Designs
- Y’all: Go with the Flow from Designs by JuJu
You don’t need these exact fonts. Start with the ones you already own and play around. Lettering about three-quarters of an inch tall worked well for the smaller words.
